And another cracker! I love my job and this blog! So, as I learn more, I find out that Coonawarra in South Australia is legendary for its Cabernet Sauvignon (my favourite wine a’la David Brent), thanks to the region’s famous terra rossa soils and temperate climate. Iconic producers like Wynns Coonawarra Estate and Katnook Estate have helped establish its global reputation, producing wines known for elegance, structure, and age-worthiness. Lucky for me, whilst I work at the largest wine owner and maker in the world, Petaluma falls under our stable. They have long been part of this story, crafting Cabernet Sauvignons that combine classic Coonawarra precision with approachability. The 2019 vintage is a vibrant expression of the region’s hallmark richness and finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Cabernet Sauvignon is an absolute knockout! It pours a deep garnet with a slight purple rim, showing youthful intensity. The nose is inviting, offering aromas of blackcurrant, dark cherry, and plum, with hints of cedar, graphite, and a subtle touch of mint. On the palate, it is medium-to-full-bodied, with firm, polished tannins and balanced acidity that lifts the dark fruit core. Flavours of blackberry, cassis, and dark chocolate carry through to a long, structured finish, showcasing both power and elegance typical of Coonawarra Cabernets.
Wrap-Up
On the taste scale, this is medium-to-full-bodied, structured, and fruit-driven, with well-integrated tannins and a lingering finish. Price-wise, expect around £30–35 / $35–45, reflecting its premium regional pedigree. On Vivino, it typically sits at 4.1/5, showing strong appreciation among Cabernet enthusiasts. Pair it with grilled beef, lamb, or aged cheddar to enjoy its depth and structure at its best.
