Petaluma 2018 Coonawarra – Evans Vinyard

Some wines are memorable; others redefine what you expect from a varietal. Petaluma’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon from Evans Vineyard is the latter, a benchmark for elegance and power in harmony. I was in love with the Petaluma Cabernet Sauvignon I tried a few weeks back when I tasted that one, but this one has blown me away and must be my favourite wine of this blog series so far. An utter, full-bodied delight! This is a wine that doesn’t just impress; it commands respect. This is my new Christmas dinner wine, and no mistake!

First Impressions

Deep, opaque crimson with a garnet rim. The nose is layered and complex: blackcurrant and cassis leap forward, followed by cedar, cigar box, and graphite. Subtle notes of dark chocolate and dried herbs add intrigue, promising depth and longevity.

On the Palate

Full-bodied and structured, yet refined. Concentrated black fruit—cassis, blackberry—melds with savoury elements of tobacco and earth. The tannins are firm but beautifully polished, giving grip without aggression. Oak is seamlessly integrated, adding spice and a whisper of vanilla. Acidity is vibrant, lifting the richness and ensuring balance. This is a wine built for ageing but already stunning in its youth.

Pairing Potential

Think classic: prime rib, venison, or a rich beef Wellington. It’s a wine that elevates any special occasion and rewards slow, contemplative sipping.

Verdict

An utter full-bodied delight—the standout of this blog series so far. Complex, powerful, and elegant, Petaluma 2018 is a masterclass in Cabernet Sauvignon.⭐ Rating: 4.8/5
